What is a Service Enterprise?

SEI is a national change management approach to increase nonprofit resources and sustainability through workforce transformation.

A Service Enterprise is an organization that strategically leverages volunteers to achieve operational efficiency and greater social impact. Service Enterprises are among the top 11 percent of nonprofits in the country in volunteer management and organizational performance.

Research conducted by TCC Group and Deloitte shows that nonprofits operating as a Service Enterprise are as effective as peers but at almost half the median budget, and they are significantly more adaptable, sustainable and scalable. Become a leader in capacity building and engagement by becoming a certified Service Enterprise.

How Does
the Service Enterprise program Work?

Assessment

Your organization will take Service Enterprise Diagnostic, a comprehensive analysis tool developed by Points of Light. The results are reviewed with you by experienced coaches from The Triangle Nonprofit & Volunteer Leadership Center (TNVLC).

Training

Up to 4 members of your organization attend in-depth, interactive training developed by Points of Light (16 total hours) delivered by experienced instructors from TNVLC. Your team participates with several other local nonprofits (a cohort). During training, your team will develop a detailed Action Plan to become a “Service Enterprise.”

Review

TNVLC coaches review your Action Plan and during the first year, your agency can receive up to 10 hours of coaching and/or training as well as helping you achieve SE Certification. They will do a Certification Review and submit your application for national SE Certification!

How much does the program cost?

This year (2023) TNVLC was awarded an SEI Training grant from Governor Cooper’s office to provide financial assistance to area nonprofits.

This program is valued at between $5K-$10K.

Over 95% of the training costs are covered by the Governor’s office Grant.

The registration fee is $150 per nonprofit which also allows up to four participants for the 8 week program.

If you have any questions, please email Trudy Smith.

From our Clients

The Service Enterprise program gave my team an opportunity to look at all aspects of our volunteer program objectively and learn about opportunities for improvement. Changes that the team implemented because of their involvement in Service Enterprise have already made positive impacts on our program.
Kelly Vaughn
Senior Vice President, Special Olympics North Carolina.
This opportunity gave us the chance to reflect on our methods of volunteer management, to see what we do well and what we can improve. Service Enterprise has not only opened us to a network of professionals in volunteer management, but also has provided tools to ensure the Food Bank can provide a meaningful volunteer experience in the most engaging, efficient, and effective way.
Mary Maxton
Manager of Volunteer Engagement, Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina.
